Of Stubborn Dad and Orang Bunians

Why do you think men, as they get older, they become more stubborn?

I’m talking about my dad. Don’t get me wrong. I love my dad but sometimes…ARGGGHHH!!!

My dad has kidney problems. It’s quite serious because he has to go for dialysis 3 times a week. It all started with a toothache. He had it for a while but refuse to go to the dentist to have it pulled out. To stop the pain, he took more than 10 tablets of ponstan per day. Which means in a week, he would’ve popped in 70 tablets of ponstan or maybe more?! The doctor said that was the cause of his kidney problem. Ponstan overdose. To avoid feeling the pain from the toothache, he had inadvertently jeopardised his kidney. He hates dialysis. He says it makes him weak all the time. I sympathise with him but what else can he do? My mom suggested kidney transplant but he said it’s too long a wait. He wants new kidneys NOW.

A few days back my dad’s cousin called him and told him there is this guy who can give him new kidneys but the guy is Tangkak. My dad got all excited and ask my mom to accompany him to Tangkak. I could strangle my dad’s cousin for telling my dad about this and getting him all excited. GRRRRR!!!

So 2 days ago, my parents drove down to Tangkak, Johor. My dad said his cousin told him that there is this guy who is like a shaman doctor and allegedly he can replace any organs in your body which is defective and you only have to pay the guy RM308.10. Does it make sense? Can’t be so cheap right? My parents went there to see whether this guy is for real coz my dad said that he would ask the guy to replace both his kidneys. When I asked my dad where would this guy get 2 healthy kidneys coz u cant just pluck a kidney out of thin air to which my dad answered,

“From orang bunian I think”.

“And you are okay with getting new kidneys from orang bunian?” Kang orang bunian tu mintak balik kidney dia camner?” I asked my dad.

“The guy is like a doctor. He was quoting all medical lingo and was telling us what is wrong with your mom’s backbone and my kidney. The guy also said he could fix my vision so I don’t have to wear glasses anymore. For RM308.10 he can replace any internal organs yang rosak like pancreas, liver, heart. Even doctors go to see him with their patients”.

EEEEKKKKKKKK!!! For real ah? Why do we need doctors la if this guy can fix everything??!!! Plus anyone can quote medical mumbo jumbo if they had looked it up on the internet!

Haiyooo…my dad ni kan so gullible tau. He tends to believe all this hocus pocus. How la to tell him not to believe all this? Sigh…

In desperate moments people will tend to believe in everything. But who knows, it might work.. my aunt had a breast cancer about 8 years ago. The doctor said she needs to undergo the operation. Dia tak nak.. dia ambik hemeopathy jer and minum air jampi. and, she's cleared of cancer till today.

*i know i'm not helping here* :P

Sounds scary, this special-offer kidneys. Then again, your dad is ailing and any glimmer of hope will be explored.

heyya,
my arwah mama was on heamodialisisfor 4 years..3x a week too. You know what I noticed abt them is they get really tired after each session and all they can think of is sleep...My mom used to dread going for her sessions. So I can understand when they tend to hope for miracles to be healthy again..coz dialysis is not easy.

I think what you can do is advise yr dad dgn penuh patience coz parents when they have aged they can be really stubborn.

hang in there!

OMG...how can your dad fall for that nonsense? (excuse me) ehehe u better talk your dad out of it before things get worse lah!

Wow! I'm so tempted to go for a brain replacement too! ;)

I guess there's no harm in trying. It does sound bogus, but sometimes, once bitten, twice shy.

Sherie - Susah gak ah nak cakap. Kena check out betul2 whether that guy is for real, I've known cases yg jenis ala-ala operate tapi tak pakai pisau tu and when they did it, and pegi jumpa doktor, mmg cancer/batu karang tu secara miraclenya dah takde dlm xray tuh. Maybe you can get someone older or his siblings to try talk to him first la.
Takut I dengar u cakap pasal ponstan tu sbb dulu pun I selalu makan, asal sakit kepala je makan coz panadol mcm takde effect. Then bila first time kena gastric teruk last 2 months and doc said my gastric got worst due to my ponstan consumption sambil skip meals, I dah serik dah.. pikir 10 kali nak makan ponstan tau..

better ikut your dad next time...and make sure yourself.
takut jugak dengar...

cosmic, sometimes when someone "believes" that he/she is cured, it will actually help the recovery process. psychological reassurance helps... Play along je la... Heheh...

I can empathise with your predicament since my mom has long suffered from kidney disease since 1987 and finally turned to dialysis in 1999 after the disease became chronic.

And then in 2005, my young brother was diagnosed with sudden kidney failure.

After the first dialysis session, my then 24-year old brother said, "I feel much better now" - meaning he didn't want dialysis anymore. My heart cried out for him.

Oooops, dah panjang lak. Anyhow, I wonder why the 10 sen in the RM308.10? Commission to the bunian? :)

CG what to do, most of us want the easy way out.... 3 times a week dialysis can be very tiring and agony...

Just do the best for your father, while he is still around....

Hi cosmic gurl..sorry to hear abt yr dad's sickness but old folks's beliefs are sometimes ridiculous...

For me, I dun believe all this crap..if this so called bomoh can really do miracles he would be famous and world renowned..especially if Doctors seek his services...hehe!

I have a friend who went to JB to
'cuci' darah..it seems that there is a doctor who can give blood transfusion and cleanse the body of 'bad' blood...it was expensive, abt the same price you quoted...
I dun want to scare you but my friend now suffers from a bad skin disease and she is suffering even worse!

Miracles? nah...never happen in these days..bullshit..yes...
What a bad way to make money huh?

Thanks for all your comments above. Yes, I know my dad is old and therefore as a good daughter I should just let him do whatever he wants with his body (furthermore he really believes in it) but I still have doubt with regard to the shaman's credibility. Sigh...

Baca your story about your dad ni teringat pulak my mum.

My mother also has kidney failure. But before we finally convinced her to go through dialysis, memang seksa siot. She ni jenis penakut. She was adamant on not going through the dialysis treatment, wanting to berubat cara kg. But lepas berubat cara kg nothing happened, & her health deteriorated faster than you can say 'dukun!', she finally relented.

Now that she's doing dialysis & couldn't see what the big fuss was all about initially, she says "Kalau tau senang macam ni, awal2 lagi Mak dah buat dialysis."

RM308.10? 10 sen tu untuk apa?

Doll, maybe it's worthwhile if you get your father to talk to his doctor about Peritoneal Dialysis (PD).

It's another alternative for dialysis whereby you do it at home instead of having to go to the hospital for 3 days a week.

I have worked with many patients who switched from HD to PD and enjoying a very good quality of life.

Of course, this would depend on his medical condition.

Thought you should know :)
