I Am Not A Tin Kosong

You see I'm not the kind of person who likes to "kipas/jilat bontot" my superiors. I let my my work speak for itself. But nowadays, told that's not how people do things anymore. "Tin kosong" is in and "diam-diam berisi" is out.
I've been told that for you to be noticed by the higher powers that be, you need to be more vocal during meetings. You need to speak up and give your views or do like what some people would do i.e. summarise the views of their colleagues and then voice it out confidently like it's their own views. Smart kan? I honestly can't stand these kind of people. You know, people who has opinions about EVERYTHING but not necessarily their own?!
I know a person who rarely socialises with his colleagues outside of work but if he hears that his boss was going to be there then he would turn up just to "show face". I just couldnt be bothered. If I dont feel like socialising after working hours then I wont bother turning up even if my boss was going to be there. But I know for a fact that socialising after office hours does help one's career.
I've been feeling very de-motivated lately. I need to get out of this funk I'm in or else I'm going to sink even deeper. God help me, please.

trust me, this penyakit is everywhere. mana2 corporate pun ada penyakit keparat ni. and the higher you get, the worst those sharks are... they'll do just about anything to make you look incompetent. my take in this is either you go with the flow and be pretentious sebab everyone needs to survive, or, make dono just be yourself but risk being invisible when annual evaluation comes. i chose the latter all the time... memang penat and demotivating but at least your conscience is clear malam2 when you sleep. take care, ya.

hehehe...C-gurl,

allow me ya...in anywhere u makan gaji u will face this irony..depending on what u want and what u see of urself in the org or org chart, everything will have to come from u. A competent staff is a competent staff. But sometimes to climb up the corporate ladder u need to display ur superiority as a leader. If u r ambitious then u will have to work ur butt up to be on top. If ur r pretty, u can charm the upper echelons to help u go up. If u r not so pretty, then u have to use other strategy(ies) to help u up. Everyone wants to be siting at the top as those positions do less work but earns more than u. That is the simple rule. If u r required to socialize(formal?) after work, GO! But excuse urself early la. But if socializing for suka2 only, that is not so important lah hehe....just tell them "I have had enuff of that when I was younger"..we cannot escape these typical corporate issue...so choose the path you want...if u want to be a leader, make urself seen...its not going to be easy but that is how the game is played...

stay focus...

cheers..

p.s. my condolence on the passing of ur beloved grandpa

Raven - Yucks!! LOL!

Rozz - Hmmm..u do have a point there but if socialising after work involves drinking alcohol etc then id rather not la even if Im the only one not drinking. I would feel very uncomfortable

I don't socialize with work colleague after office hours because I don't have time, but even if I have all the time in the world I'd rather hang out with my best friends who've known me all my life. It's dangerous when we hang out too often with work colleagues. We'll start to share perhaps too much details about ourselves, you know.. sometimes even personal stuffs. We don't know most of our work colleagues' history, intention and personal issues. They might be backstabbers in the near future. So, need to be extra careful.

C_gurl,

ok I read u. Do u know that many bosses (even if they drink) appreciates u if u don't? Anyhow that leaves u with very little choice. I have been in ur situation where drinking n women makes u closer to the boss (that drinks). I have always chose not to. The boss don't know much about me n promotion ain't something easy peasy for me. He only knew I don't drink but has always delivered the good work he wanted. I participate actively in his meetings. I climbed the corporate ladder rather slowly but surely. Jealousy is part n parcel of a working life. Stress is every where in the corporate world as everyone around u especially ur peers, are competing with u for promotion or naik gaji ke, bonus ke. So u kena muhasabah diri lah. The choice is urs. End of the day when ur conscience is clear, ur life will not be a miserable one.

just my 2 cents..

Good luck to you.

Cheers...
