To Eat Or Not To Eat...Is That The Question?

If you, a muslim go to a restaurant and there’s a sign that says “No Pork Served”, would you still eat at the restaurant? Would you actually go into the restaurant and ask whether they buy halal chicken or lamb or beef?

What about if they cook a dish with alcohol? Are you one of those people who would tell themselves that alcohol evaporate while the dish is being cooked and therefore it’s not “haram” to eat that dish?

What if the restaurant has no halal sign but you see muslims eating food inside the restaurant. Would you go in and eat as well?

Hmmm…

kedai yang ada logo 'HALAL sebenar' pun belum tentu ayam nya disembelih ikut syarak...kedai tu order je dari pembekal..pembekal pulak upah warga asing utk sembelih ayam..

Kedai 'Halal maaa....' banyak sekarang ni.. tiada pork tetapi mungkin ada martini dalam steam prawn dia..

Fatty Crab tmn megah..sedap tapi ketam dia yg dua alam atau tidak..tiada kepastian..tapi setakat makcik pakai tudung makan tu melambak..dan makcik pakai tudung bukan wakil halal jakim.muehehe.

Makanan Kegemaran : yang halal
-jawapan kegemaran biodata artis baru nak naik..huhu

Ikut syarak, yang penting yakin. Kalau was2 baik tak usah. But jangan lah yg ber-alcohol/khinzir pun nak diyakini. Yang haram tetap haram, there's no 2 ways about it :-)

normally kalau tak de sijil halal, I was2 so I will end up asking the owner or staff if there is a sijil..even tho ada mak cik2 kat dlm. Sometimes Indonesians yg tak Islam pun pakai tudung.

well, if you are particular then go ahead and ask questions. if you are like me (ie not particular), then you dont.

think of it like this, it is a personal preference. i have non muslims who preferred not to eat pork.

and i agree. Makciks in tudung is no indication that the food is 100%halal. no one person could be absolutely 100% sure about the food. apa yang ada, if you yakin, makan je la.

CG, I think just tepuk dada tanya selera. As for haram and halal, just take it at its face value. If not, we are not going to eat at the restaurant.

I agree with sarclover.

Kalau kat M'sia - I'll pass. Banyak option lain. Tapi kalau dah no choice tu, tawakkal ajelah...

CG,

I just realised u put my link at ur site. Thanks yeah! *smiles*

Cant comment much about the above since I spend 1/3 of my life abroad. But back home, I usually stick to the sign. Here, some places have signs but if there is none, I follow the locals i.e. be a vegetarian. *winks*

i second Paus Biru

and it is not about personal preference
when it comes to about Halal Haram
as a muslim, one need to know the fundamental i.e. the basic
what is, how will, why is it

More often than not, relying on seeing the Jakim's Halal logo or Halal logo issued by State's Islamic Affairs, is the only 'effort' we can do to ensure the halalness of the stuffs we consume. Unless of course, some of us would dig deeper to investigate how genuine did those shops/manufacturers get their halal certification.

Do u know, most of the Malaysian non-muslims out there think as long as no pork, that means, we Muslims can eat. So, my answer is NO, I will definitely not visiting shops that display 'no pork' and nothing more (i.e. but without halal certificates).

Also, I won't easily enter a restaurant just because I see Malays eating in there.. There are those among us who live by the "bedal ajalah, asalkan jangan makan b*b*" principle. Heck, I know someone who regularly asks her colleague to buy her noodles from 'pure non-halal Chinese' shop, simply because she said, there's no meat in the noodles - just vegetables. "Kembang tekak aku..."

tiena - Hehehe..haiyoo tiena, cannot like that la :P

jorji - Scary la if u cannot even trust the HALAL sign..to me if ada HALAL sign from Jakim then mmg i akan makan kat situ...kalau ayam dia jual tak halal then itu antara dia ngan tuhan...The owner of the restaurant la kena tanggung dosa pasal menipu public. I cannot go into every restaurant yang ada sign Halal and then ask the owner to show me their kitchen and from who he buys the chicken/beef..a bit cumbersome kan?

pugly - Yup ure right, yang haram tetap haram...no two ways abt it :)

Nour - U will actually ask? But I thought they have to visibly display the sijil Halal iside the restaurant kan? Kalau takder mmg I tak masuk la...

Sarclover - Yup it all depends on your personal preference la...Whtever it is kena remember semua yang kita makan jadik darah daging :)

East43St - I guess it's even more difficult if u live in a country whre the population are mostly non-muslims i.e. negara omputih la..

PB - Yeah ure right. I guess because we're in Msia we have more choices...

MsIstanbul - No worries :) I find yr blog very interesting...hehehe...Hey! we mcDreamy fans must stick together :P

KB - Im sure u dont have probs finding Halal food or Hakak restaurant whre ure staying right now kan? Hehehe...

Lynn - Yup thts the way it should be

PM - Errkk! Wht if they put lard in the noodle? Your colleagues mmg jenis tak kisah kot :))

CosmicGurl,cannot like that ah?

if i dont know you and i see you eating in fatty crab taman megah ("sedap tapi ketam dia yg dua alam atau tidak..tiada kepastian.." tapi im very sure u memang makan fatty crab kan?),i'd still go in.:P

u mmg bukan wakil halal jakim but if u yakin to eat there,i pun yakin lah.sebab i may not be alim and all but at least i think the tudung on that someone's head indicates that she knows what she eats.

p/s makcik-makcik je la,if i see budak2 muda pakai tudung tapi pakai baju short sleeves singkat nampak cleavage and butt crack and all,i takde lah nak percaya.:P

kalau ada perasaan prasangka lebih baik makan kat rumah. kalau terpaksa makan kat kedai.. makan makanan yg cara penyediaannya simple ja. Skarang ni kebanyakkan menu ada ditulis bahan2 nya skali. Kalau dah confiden baca menu order dan makan pun confiden la. Pasai halal dan haram ni sapa pun tak tau kecuali tukang masak tu sendiri.

This is very interesting. How would you categorised Starbucks, Coffeebean etc,...Dunkin Donut, Big Apple etc, those fancy foreign restaurant and restaurants in 5 stars Hotel.
I personally know lots of Muslims who frequent Non-Halal restaurants but they preach they are good Muslims. I think lots of Malaysian Malays practised Islam just for show, once they are not in Malaysia....everything goes.

If you go to your non-muslim friend's house, and he/she serves food made from halal products, but the utensils used, you know has been used to eat pork, would you eat?

The hukum is harus.

In Malaysia, no HALAL sign is just to show that the place serves alcohol too, especially in hotels and other places like Starbucks etc. The source could be HALAL. You can always insist on checking if you want need to see a HALAL logo for you to be able to eat without "your throat expanding".

Mamak shops more often than not do not have any HALAL certification, but muslim malays go there to eat because there is that Bismillah framed sign hanging.

That sign comes down during the month of Ramadhan. So is the shopowner or cook a Muslim?

Everything in this world is HALAL unless stated in the al-Quran to be otherwise. Tepuk dada tanya selera. Kalau was-was, jangan.
